L’Histoire de l’Alliance Française

The Alliance Française is the largest and oldest network of French language and cultural centers in the world. Founded in 1883 in Paris, the Alliance Française has grown to 850 chapters dedicated to promoting French language and francophone culture and fostering relationships between people of all nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds. While 136 countries boast at least one city with an Alliance Française, the US is home to 114 chapters, making it the largest and most diverse in the network.

“My formal study of French began when I was in Junior High School and continued through my college years where I was a French major at Hunter College in New York in the 1960s. France is my primary place to travel. My involvement in the workshops at Alliance Française has helped to keep me “au courant” in the French language, culture, and research.”
